The global accounting organization supports our financial reporting, internal control, intercompany, and transfer pricing activities as well as supports new business launches globally for Amazon in the consumer products, digital initiatives, merchant, operations, logistics, payments, and cloud computing lines of business.

Additionally, we strongly encourage rotation within the Accounting department and the company as a whole; we aim to hire people who will raise the bar, not just in their first position, but over their career at Amazon. Given the size and growth of the Accounting department and rotation to other Amazon departments, we are looking for strong candidates to fill new positions and back-fill existing ones.

Key job responsibilities
This position will be responsible for supporting the accounting function on entity formation, restructuring and closures for our financial reporting and tax compliance purposes. Working with cross-department business leaders and functional accounting teams to ensure a seamless process through proposal, approval and posting into the company's financial statements. Candidates will work in a fast-paced environment, manage through ambiguity and complexity while supporting multiple, simultaneous project launches impacting the global accounting organization. An ideal candidate must be able to research technical accounting concepts and prepare technical accounting position papers. As well, have experience with transactions under common control and consolidation accounting topics.

This role requires excellent communication and organization skills, including the ability to anticipate, identify and communicate risks to senior leadership. Successful candidates for this position will have 12+ years of professional experience with financial reporting and internal control related responsibilities. Many of our candidates for this position will also have held similar positions in larger public companies or who have held a senior manager level position with a Big 4 public accounting firm serving Fortune 500 clients for 2 or more years. Candidate experience should cover financial processes, project management, accounting conclusion documentation, and process design. Demonstrated experience in leading teams to accomplish unusually complex challenges will be expected as this is an ongoing requirement for this position.

A day in the life
• Accounting ownership for recording and reporting transactions under common control.

• Proactively identifying, researching, consulting, and drafting technical memorandums on significant transactions.

• Working independently to lead projects to support Amazon's corporate structure to ensure appropriate business support and controllership.

• Responsibility for delivery of complex cross functional projects.

• Prioritize work for global project teams, monitoring transactions to ensure standards are maintained.

• Identifying and communicating project risks to senior leadership, along with clear recommendations for resolution or mitigation.

• Partner with corporate legal, tax and financial operations team on communication of key operational and accounting issues identified.

Basic Qualifications:
• 12+ years of finance experience or a related analytical field.
• Degree in accounting or related field with sufficient experience to sit for the CPA exam (a CPA license is not required for this position)
• Experience with documenting accounting conclusions and related support
• Strong controls and compliance experience
• Ability to work effectively across multiple groups managing tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:
• CPA (or equivalent)
• Big 4 public accounting experience with Fortune 500 clients
• Expert level understanding of an internal control framework (specifically COSO) to assess control design and operational efficiency and teach these concepts to more junior team members.
• Familiarity with GAAP research tools and the FASB codification
• Experience with documenting accounting conclusions related support
• Operational accounting experience with one or more Fortune 500 companies
• Experience working in a fast paced environment similar to a high tech start-up
• A demonstrated history of solving multiple and complex operational and accounting challenges
• Aptitude for leading teams; influencing and galvanizing others to follow you toward a solution
• Strong interpersonal written and oral communication skills
• Solid organizational skills along with an aptitude for information technology
• Excellent analytical skills
