Your opportunity

You will provide support to our clients, helping their Finance functions deliver more. Using our expert skills and proven methodologies, you will diagnose the root causes, and assist in the resolution, of issues facing Finance functions. Deloitte is committed to working closely with entities across the public sector, including Central Government, Government Agencies, Local Government, Defence, Security and Justice, Health and Social Care, Transport and Education.

We are looking for candidates with a strong finance background who can demonstrate a mix of operational finance, project management, project- based transformation, public sector accounting & budgeting and/or change management experience and skills.

We deliver innovative, bespoke solutions to CFOs through initiatives including:
  • improvement to core finance processes;
  • assessment and redefinition of the finance function operating model;
  • development of management information;
  • strengthening of planning, budgeting and forecasting processes;
  • development of finance business partnering;
  • finance skills and capability development;
  • assessment of financial governance arrangements;
  • commercial support, including business case and investment appraisals; and
  • provision of technical accounting and budgeting advice.

Your role

Responsibilities will include:
  • Extensive liaison with clients at all levels of the organisation to identify and understand issues and present practical and achievable solutions
  • First principle thinking and development of innovative engagement approaches to meet client requirements
  • Project planning and management of the day-to-day client relationship and overall project delivery
  • Identify and appropriately manage project risks
  • Facilitation of workshops and objective-setting at the top level of client project teams, providing challenge and integration of ideas
  • Provision of support to clients to implement recommendations
  • Working effectively in diverse teams and helping to build an inclusive team culture where people are recognised for their contribution
  • Management, development and mentoring of more junior team members
  • Building relationships across service lines and geographies to deliver market and client focused solutions
  • Producing proposals for future projects
  • Regular attendance at internal industry and team events, and training sessions

Your professional experience

Successful candidates will have worked either in a finance team within a public sector organisation or have a background in working with those organisations in a consulting or other professional services capacity.

To qualify for the role you must have/be:
  • Keen commitment to continue to support the public sector and understanding of the current challenges and opportunities facing the sector
  • Experience of working in finance role(s) within the public sector or of working with public sector organisations in a consulting / advisory capacity
  • Educated to degree level, or have equivalent experience
  • ACA / ACCA / CIMA / CIPFA qualified or committed to studying
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong negotiation, influencing and presentation skills
  • Proven planning and project management skills
  • Ability to work proactively, independently and as a team player
  • Strong networking skills and/or proven business development experience
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • Proven experience of effectively engaging with non-finance staff, including at Executive Team level (for more senior roles)

In addition, you will demonstrate experience in at least one of the following:
  • Providing financial advice to public sector projects and programmes, including programme financial management / reporting / forecasting
  • Delivering and improving financial processes, reporting, management information, planning, budgeting and forecasting within a public organisation
  • Providing technical accounting and budgeting advice in accordance with the Government Financial Reporting Manual (FReM), Consolidated Budgeting Guidance and Managing Public Money
  • Finance business partnering
  • Business case drafting using the HMT Green Book Model
  • Delivering finance function improvement and change
  • Designing and implementing finance operating models
  • Implementation of tactical reporting tools and/or automation of financial processes
  • Finance system implementation, including chart of account design and associated management and statutory reporting
