Responsible for managing multiple units or functions, and providing leadership and guidance to subordinate managers. Develops, implements, and communicates an overall strategy to meet both the unit’s and the corporation’s strategic plan. Oversees, plans, and directs the activities for the units, ensuring that resources are available to accomplish the business objectives.

  1. Manages Compliance through the direct management of a group of managers. Oversees, plans, and directs the activities for the units, ensuring that the business objectives are being met.
  2. Develops, implements, and communicates an overall strategy to meet both the business unit’s and the corporation’s strategic plan. Directs the activities of the area towards accomplishing those objectives.
  3. Oversees the financial and staff resources, including developing and managing capital and expense budgets, and ensuring that resources are available to accomplish the objectives set for the area.
  4. Assumes full accountability for the performance/profitability of the area as compared to the plan.
  5. Establishes and maintains principals for regulatory compliance across the breadth of regulation applicable to the Corporation. Coordinates and documents compliance with laws, regulations and policies regarding financial services regulatory requirements on conduct and financial crime.
  6. Maintains general familiarity with state and federal laws and regulations relating to products and services provided by Northern Trust, including banking and fiduciary activities. Monitors legislative and regulatory changes and communicates changes to affected business units.
  7. Ensures that the Corporation’s Compliance and Ethics Program is maintained in the form approved by the Board of Directors.
  8. In collaboration with the Legal department, reviews and coordinates comments submitted by the Corporation to applicable regulatory bodies with respect to proposed changes. Chairs the Corporation’s Compliance and Ethics Oversight Committee, researches and interprets compliance issues.
  9. Monitors and verifies the activities of legal entity and practice compliance officers, ensuring that applicable laws and regulations are in compliance, and that proactive measures and tests are in place to guarantee compliance.
  10. Provides periodic reporting on regulatory compliance and compliance-related matters to the Corporation’s Business Risk Committee.
  11. Ensures appropriate compliance training is provided for all global staff and agents.
  12. Assists in the development of risk performance expectations which relate to compliance for all global staff. Reviews expectations with compliance officer and senior management as appropriate.
  13. Reviews correspondence with regulatory agencies for areas that require attention. Evaluates exceptions from Chief Audit Executive, external auditor, and regulatory agencies and follows up with business unit to ensure corrective action is taken.
  • Relevant proven work experience is preferred. Related industry qualification preferred
  • Knowledge of business strategy development is necessary to provide long term planning and to manage the profitability/performance of a major business segment.
  • Leadership and organizational skills are required to direct the activities for the multiple units.
  • Knowledge of compliance programs, concepts and requirements in regulated financial institutions.
  • Understanding of existing and evolving regulatory environments around the world.
  • Knowledge of Consumer Regulations and Statutes, Statutes and Regulations which affect Bank Operations, Employment Related Regulations and Statutes and Principal Fiduciary Laws and Regulations, usually acquired through formal education and experience is required to administer the corporate compliance program.
  • Knowledge of Financial Crime, Capital Markets, and Conduct regulations
  • Analytical skills are required to review laws and regulations and assess their impact on various areas of the bank.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate and manage relationships with regulators and board of directors
