Northern Trust is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant with strong communication, analytical, and problem solving skills.

Major Duties:

US Federal Income Tax Compliance – Assistance with the completion and filing of the Corporation’s Federal income tax return. Includes:

  • Reviewing the book-to-tax adjustments and tax forms as prepared by the Corporate Tax staff.
  • Ensure that the Corporation’s income tax return is compliant with US income tax laws, regulations, rulings, etc.
  • Assistance with research and technical documentation of the Corporation’s Federal income tax return filing positions
  • Monitoring tax law/regulations/rulings, etc. for changes that might impact the Corporation’s Federal income tax return.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the tax return compliance process.
  • Leading other compliance matters such as extension and estimated tax calculations.
  • Assistance with resolution of any matters raised by the IRS upon audit and responding to IRS notices

Accounting for Income Taxes (ASC 740) – Assist with the preparation of various aspects of Corporate Tax’s “accounting for income taxes” responsibilities subject to manager review. Includes:

  • Preparation of support for components of the Corporation’s income tax reserves, such as current, deferred, and required income tax reserves on a quarterly basis,
  • Preparation of various components of the Income Taxes footnote for the Annual Report,
  • Analysis and validation of deferred income tax balances on an annual basis, and
  • Assistance with technical analysis and documentation of matters as needed.

Technology Matters –

  • Responsible for on-going maintenance of the Corporation’s OneSource tax compliance software.
  • Assistance in trouble-shooting of any issues in the software that arise, including issues related to electronic filing.
  • Assist with on-going maintenance of the various components of the Corporation’s income tax reserves within OneSource’s tax provision software.
  • Identification of opportunities to improve current processes, including but not limited to implementation of automation to increase efficiencies.

Income Tax Planning –

  • Assist with the identification, research, and implementation of Federal, state, and international income tax planning ideas.
  • Assist with preparation of associated technical memos.

Communication – Proactive communication with various internal and external partners, including business unit partners, internal auditors, external tax/legal firms, and IRS auditors.

Special Projects – Participate in and lead special projects within Corporate Tax on an as-needed basis in the areas of Federal, state, and international taxation.

Project Management and Staff Development – Ensures that projects are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Prioritizes short and long term project completion as well as allocation of available resources to ensure project completion. Provides guidance to Corporate Tax staff and works to develop their professional and technical skills.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience, Public Accounting Firm and/or Industry experience highly beneficial
  • US FAS 109/ASC 740 Accounting for Income Taxes
  • Extremely competent in Tax Compliance – Federal
  • Competent in Tax Compliance – General
  • US Overall Tax Technical Skills
  • Proven research and planning skills
  • Possess technical skills including Tax software (OneSource OIT) and MS Office products
  • Excellent communication, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must be able to work in a team environment while showcasing leadership capabilities
  • A Master degree in taxation or any other advance degree is desirable but not required. CPA certification is preferred
