Job description

Manager / Senior Manager - Financial Reporting Group – UK&I Assurance

The Financial Reporting Group (FRG) operates within our Assurance Service Line. We’re looking for Managers and Senior Managers who are motivated, curious and passionate about quality to join our growing team in the UK. FRG members are currently attached to London, Leeds, Glasgow and Bristol offices, but since we work collaboratively as a single UK team, other locations can be considered and the role is also compatible with remote and flexible working.

The opportunity

As a member of FRG, you will provide audit teams with support and advice on technical accounting and financial reporting requirements, enabling them to deliver high quality audits and to manage the risks involved. Given the dynamic and often complex nature of accounting and financial reporting regulations, you’ll be a member of a team that is at the leading edge of fulfilling EY’s purpose to serve the public interest by promoting trust and confidence in business and the capital markets.

The role is varied, provides countless opportunities to learn and improve your technical accounting skills and gives you exposure to the firm’s quoted and other public interest audit clients. You will develop specialist areas of competence which opens the door to membership of subject matter groups and other networks at EMEIA and Global levels in EY.

Your key responsibilities

The core elements of your role in FRG will involve:

  • Performing pre-issuance reviews of the interim and year-end financial reports of our public interest audit clients. The objective of these reviews is to ensure that any significant and unusual accounting or financial reporting matters have been accounted for and disclosed appropriately
  • Providing a key point of contact to our audit teams for advice and support on accounting technical matters under IFRS & UK GAAP, working within a collaborative team of fellow technical accounting professionals in FRG
  • Contributing to the development of thought leadership, such as EY’s International GAAP publication. You will also participate in the firm’s EMEIA and Global technical accounting subject matter groups
  • Developing and delivering high quality technical training for our people in the audit practice, as well as coaching and developing teams in technical accounting matters on a day to day basis

Skills and attributes for success

  • Commitment to your personal development by applying existing knowledge in new situations, exploring new learning experiences and actively seeking coaching and feedback
  • Dedication to quality and risk management, maintaining independence and objectivity and complying with all professional standards, EY policies and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to articulate a technical argument, navigating complex and ambiguous fact patterns by leveraging differences, asking questions and applying professional scepticism in arriving at appropriate judgements
  • Confidence to challenge audit team or client conclusions where appropriate, to consult with others and to assist in bringing resolution to areas of disagreement

To qualify for the role you must have

  • A good working knowledge of UK GAAP, IFRS, UK regulations and UK company law
  • Familiarity with financial reporting requirements for quoted, listed and AIM companies
  • Ability to network effectively and build relationships with individuals and clients
  • ACA/CA/ACCA (ICAEW, ICAS, ICAI or equivalent international qualification)

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • External audit experience
  • Experience in advising on accounting for complex transactions
  • Good presentation skills
  • Accounting technical knowledge in particular industries or sectors

What we look for

Top performers in FRG are passionate about delivering quality and robustly enforce EY policies in this area. They develop an ability to break complex problems down to their component parts in a way that allows fact patterns to be confirmed, alternatives explored and compelling conclusions to be presented to audit teams and clients. They are inclusive, open to different ideas and perspectives in addressing the problems brought to them by audit teams. They are recognised by audit partners as a respected advisor whose views are actively sort out on a variety of matters. They develop subject matter specialisms to the level that they are recognised as experts Globally in EY.

What we offer

Whatever stage you are at in your career, we offer you an unequalled opportunity to take your accounting and technical reporting knowledge and skills to the next level. You will create new networks, working with audit teams serving our public interest clients and well as consulting with internationally recognised technical experts, not only in our UK team but also at EMEIA and Global levels.

We offer variety. From performing accounts pre-issuance reviews, to developing thought leadership and training materials; delivering presentations and helping audit teams advise companies engaged in significant transactions, no one day is the same as the next. We work in a diverse, inclusive and consultative environment where our people can be themselves.

Whether you join FRG on a short term secondment or on a longer term basis, you will acquire the accounting technical and personal skills to take your career forward.
