This is an opportunity to contribute to the community within Stoke-on-Trent by becoming an Academy Ambassador at Orchard Learning Trust. Board meetings are held at ST66JZ when safe to do so.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

The seven-school Orchard Community Trust, which serves areas of significant deprivation in Stoke-on-Trent, comprises five primary schools and two all-age schools catering to pupils with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The Trust seeks to recruit two trustees/non-executive directors with experience in PR/communications, marketing and branding, education SEND or child welfare and safeguarding. Board meetings are held virtually at this time but will take place at the Trust schools, on a rotational basis, when safe to do so.

The board seeks three business leaders with board-level experience in:

  • Branding/Marketing AND
  • PR/Communications OR
  • Education (SEND) AND
  • Child Welfare and Safeguarding

Throughout your term of office (typically four years, but this may vary between trusts), you will be an active contributor to key board decisions. Specifically, in the next 12 - 24 months the trust's key focus areas will be:

  • Covid-19 - dealing with the impact of the pandemic and its legacy.
  • Providing support for the trust's most vulnerable pupils and their families in a climate of reduced budgets and support services locally.
  • Delivering on the key priorities within the trust's Development plan.
  • Expanding the trust to ensure its long-term viability and sustainability whilst maintaining support for our founding/existing schools and retaining our shared values, principles and culture.

  • What's involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year, amounting to approximately four-six hours' time per month.

    You will be responsible for:

    • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
    • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
    • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.

    All roles are pro bono.

The Academy Ambassadors Programme is committed to supporting boards with inclusive recruitment practices, and we actively encourage applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds.
