The successful candidate will produce periodic Balance Sheet reconciliations for P2P Food & Non-Food and provide support, insight and challenge to Balance Sheet owners to highlight and resolve issues. You'll supply data and insight to facilitate continual improvement in the reconciliation processes and controls and to make business recommendations for new business initiatives. You'll calculate and deliver balance sheet forecasts and budgets for the area of responsibility and produce periodic journal for accounting processes held in the team. You'll also be responsible for the completion of various accounting processes such as catch weight journals, periodic releases to P&L.

What you need to do

  • Joint responsibility for the production of P2P Food Balance Sheet reconciliations
  • Review processes and implement and monitor robust financial controls to expose and mitigate risk associated with the accounting for payables
  • Work alongside teams across varied areas of Finance Operations to gain specialist knowledge and understanding of the processes behind the Balance Sheet accounts
  • Provide high level of debtor/ creditor analysis to assist decision making of key stakeholders
  • Periodic and ad hoc analysis of various balance sheets to assist with the periodic flash to Group Finance and with the budgeting and forecasting process.
  • Assist in the preparation for audit deliverables
  • Assist in preparing balance sheet budgeting and forecasting and provide commentary on variances. Provide analysis to flash high impacts to OI&E lines
  • Ensure any risks are highlighted to management, with an action plan for mitigation
  • Ensure all balance sheets are reconciled by the beginning of week 2
  • Ensure all balance sheets do not have any aged items more than 3 periods old

What you need to know and show


  • Studying towards an accountancy qualification
  • Communicate, engage and network across the business at all levels
  • Delivery focused with a drive to continually improve individual & team performance
  • At least 12 months Finance experience
  • Flexible, proactive and positive attitude
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and objectivity at all times
  • Ability to work unsupervised and to be part of a team whilst working to strict deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • High level of focus on customer service with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent internal & external customer relationships


  • Knowledge of Sainsbury's systems and end-to-end processes
  • Working experience in a large organisation/team environment
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot-tables, lookups & macros)
  • Dr & Cr knowledge
