The Financial Accounting and Reporting Unit of the Financial Services Division is seeking expressions of interest for a Financial Accountant (VPS 4). The opportunity is for a full time, fixed term role. Working in the Financial Accounting and Reporting Unit, the Financial Accountant will play a key role by providing: assistance with monthly, mid-year and annual reporting including financial note preparation, accurate and complete accounting for TAFE and schools' ledgers, month end journals and balance sheet reconciliations, management of one VPS 3 Finance Officer. This role assists in supporting the Department's compliance with the Financial Management Act 1994 and the Standing Directions. The role involves working with a broad range of customers from across the Department to ensure that ledger data is accurate and complete, enabling the Department to fulfil its obligation under the Financial Management Act 1994 to operate in accordance with principles of sound financial management. Working in a small, friendly team, the role reports to the Assistant Manager, Financial Accounting and Reporting. Further information is provided in the attached position description.

About the role

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Financial Accounting and Reporting, the Financial Accountant is primarily responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of the TAFE and schools' ledgers. The role is also responsible for assistance in the month end, mid-year and annual reporting processes including monthly journals and reconciliations and year-end note preparation.

About you

As our ideal candidate you will possess:
  • a proven track record in Financial Accounting in a major government department working to tight timelines
  • strong conceptual and analytical ability to problem solve, find solutions and derive meaning from financials
  • experience with Oracle or a similar enterprise solution
  • experience using Microsoft applications to an intermediate level, in particular Excel, Word and Access
  • the ability to work with large data sets to quickly and accurately extract information to support decision makers
  • the ability to be client focused and build strong relationships to develop an understanding of others
  • the ability to monitor performance against objectives, anticipating and putting steps in place to mitigate potential issues or problems.
