Seeking finance and fund-raising expertise to help re-open historic LGBTQ+ community space in Camden, London

Black Cap Community (BCC) is looking for a treasurer keen to get involved in a community effort to re-open a historic and much-loved LGBTQ+ venue in London, involving major fund-raising and investment. We would like to find someone with the experience and skills for managing large sums drawn from various sources. We would also like to find someone from one of the under-represented sectors of the LGBTQ+ community that we want to ensure are included in this effort, e.g. trans people, people of colour, disabled people.

BCC is a community benefit society created to re-open the Black Cap, the legendary pub, club, cabaret, and community space in Camden Town. The Cap has been at the heart of Camden life for hundreds of years and one of London’s most famous and popular LGBTQ+ spaces since the 9s601 Its sudden closure in 2015  prompted huge protests, and the resulting grassroots campaign has succeeded in thwarting every  attempt by the building’s owner to redevelop or repurpose the property. The Black Cap Foundation, the campaign’s legal entity, was converted into Black Cap Community in December 20. Our campaign round-up for 021  gives an overview of the story so far and where we will go next.

We are now liaising with potential partners to try to buy or lease, refurbish, and re-open the Black Cap on behalf of the community. This will involve various fund-raising efforts including sale of shares, donations, grants, and ticket-sales for events. If we succeed, the building will also need substantial investment for refurbishment and to get the venue up and running. This is an exciting and ambitious project. We also want the Black Cap to be a truly inclusive space for all LGBTQ+ people, so we want our project team to embody a wide range of backgrounds and experiences including by gender, race, disability, age, and income.

BCC is currently a small group with a small income, but we need a treasurer who can help us take on the challenges of raising and managing the large sums we hope to secure and spend. Our committee, of which the treasurer will be a key member, are all volunteers and we work together flexibly according to each person’s skills and capacity, so there will be scope to get involved in other aspects of the project and to have other committee members help with the financial side. Financial transparency and propriety will be an important area as BCC is a community-owned venture accountable to its members and trusted by donors and investors to act in the interests of those who want the Black Cap re-opened as a community venue.
