The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at single-academy and multi-academy trusts (SATs and MATs). Academy trusts exist to improve the outcomes of young people; at the highest levels of governance, they need highly skilled individuals with a variety of experiences to hold executive leadership teams to account. Insights from a wide-range of backgrounds ensure that boards are able to make informed choices on decisions that impact the lives of children and staff.
The Academy Ambassadors Programme is funded by the Department for Education, to match senior business leaders with academy trusts looking to strengthen their boards. By working together, inspirational educationalists and talented business leaders can provide a better future for the next generation.
Success Academy Trust, based in Leicestershire, is a cross-phase trust comprising a mix of four primary and secondary schools and a pre-school. The trust has a strong focus on school improvement, together with leadership and character development, as joint driving forces to raise aspiration and life chances, at the heart of its collaboration. It leads TELA Learning Alliance, a Leicestershire alliance of over thirty secondary and primary schools with a collaborative partnership ethos, which provides leadership programmes, initial teacher training, professional development and an effective school improvement team.
The trust employs 250 staff across the schools to support 2000 pupils, with a budget of approx. £10m.
The board currently has two board vacancies and they are seeking individuals who bring expertise in
- Business management / entrepreneurialism / growth management, or
- Human Resources.
The trust would especially welcome experience of growing a business, growing capacity for change, or leading change successfully within an organisation. It would be an added benefit if individuals might have experience of at least one aspect of due diligence around acquisitions. For those with HR expertise, the trust would be keen to hear from individuals who have experience of building capacity around leadership and management of human resources, and especially succession planning.
Continue to build capacity for school improvement support, both internally within the trust, and externally locally (the trust provides school to school support for some Leicestershire schools, mainly brokered by the Local Authority).
Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/4-6hours' time per month.
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.
All roles are pro bono.
