The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world and professions onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.
The opportunity
Ghyllside (rated Good by Ofsted) became an academy in 2012 with a new head teacher in 2018. We have a good reputation and experienced staff, and the school supports a range of pupils including 20% who are eligible for additional pupil premium funding. Closing the attainment gap for these pupils was a key area of work for the school following its last Ofsted inspection.
As a single academy trust, the trust board seek someone with experience of school governance, and possibly previous Chair experience, to join the board at this delightful Cumbria school, working alongside the head teacher and continuing to improve and look ahead for the school.
The board is made up of a mixture of new and longer serving Governors who have recently update the school vision. The academy employs 55 staff to support 400 pupils, with a budget of approx. £2m.
The board currently has one board vacancy and they are seeking individuals who bring expertise in
- Academy governance, and/or
- Board Chair.
As a key member of the board you will support the academy to achieve the following over the next 12 - 24 months:
What's involved?
Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which at Ghyllside involves attending 7 board meetings per academic year, and approximately 2 hours of your time per month (including preparation and attendance at meetings, and occasional visits to the trust when possible).
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.
All roles are pro bono.
People from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
