The mission of the Department of Transport is to deliver an accessible, efficient, safe and sustainable Transport system that supports communities, households and businesses. The Department has a central role in delivering on the Government’s ambition on Climate, Housing and Health, as well as other key Programme for Government commitments. The National Development Plan Review provides the Department with €35 billion of capital funding for strategic investment over the coming decade.

Reporting to the Secretary General, the Head of Road Transport Services is responsible for the development and implementation of road transport policy. Other key responsibilities include leading the design of innovative policy to promote sustainable mobility and leading the delivery of an extensive legislative programme to support safer and more environmentally friendly technical standards and regulations for vehicles. S/he will also have responsibility for the National Vehicle and Driver File which is critical to the processing of motor tax and driving licence applications and instrumental in collection of €1.5 billion in motor taxes, fees and fines.

The successful candidate will:

  • have a proven record of achievement at senior level that demonstrates the necessary vision, leadership and management skills required
  • have a strong track record of leadership in policy roles with a proven high level of management and organisational skills
  • demonstrate a strong commitment to the development and implementation of strategy across the various policy areas within the remit of the position
  • have a strong track record of leadership in operational roles using information and/or financial management systems and experience of good governance and risk management
  • have proven skills in effectively developing and maintaining key internal and external relationships to ensure delivery of business outcomes
  • have a proven ability to deliver change initiatives including people management and performance improvement.

The position is headquartered in Dublin and regular attendance at headquarters will be required, as well as in Shannon and Loughrea.  The Department operates blended remote and onsite working arrangements.

This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.
