Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Auditor to join the Standards Audit Unit team at HMP Kilmarnock. Reporting into the Assistant Director - Business Services & Governance, you will be responsible for auditing and enabling others to achieve their goals by providing assurance on operational, organisational and contractual compliance.

As our new SAU Auditor, you will be responsible for ensuring that audits are planned, implemented & completed, and that actions are appropriately assigned, tracked & completed within a reasonable timeframe. The role includes responsibility for management information systems, ensuring that business statistical data is collated, maintained, analysed and reported. Additionally, the auditor role will be a link between the contract and the customer by maintaining open, transparent, and strong, positive relationships. Other key activities will include:

  • Co-ordinating effectively with colleagues, Senior Management Team & Staff in supporting the delivery of the contract and policies, minimum standards and procedures that the business operates within.
  • Demonstrating innovation in identifying new audit streams and compliance checks to continually improve the service delivered by the Standards Audit Unit to the contract and wider Serco.
  • Attending meetings relating to Performance, SPS Audit Action, Purposeful Activity, Safer Custody, Management Information, etc., where there is a relevant link to audits conducted or Standards Audit Unit processes.
  • Assisting colleagues to manage instances of non-compliance with legislative or other requirements, code of conduct or policy and procedure utilising an effective Audit and Action Tracker for audits and tracking of actions
  • Regular daily, weekly and monthly compliance checks of critical processes such as complaints, admission processes and purposeful activity.
  • Compiling and submitting data required as part of Standards Audit Unit delivery to the contract including the use of Business Objects.


What you will need to do the role:

First and foremost, you will have experience of planning, implementing, conducting audits and reporting outcomes to inform key business decisions. You will have the ability to communicate and prioritise workloads effectively, including good time management and prioritising skills to meet tight deadlines. Experience in a custodial environment would be desirable however is not essential to the role.

To undertake this role successfully, you must have good IT skills with either existing knowledge/experience with software being used including PRS, Business Objects, and CMS, or a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in this area, as this will be a key part of your role. An Internal Audit qualification would be beneficial to the role along with a good standard of secondary education including Arithmetic and English.

As SAU Auditor, you will need to have strong interpersonal & communication skills with an enthusiastic approach to delegating and motivating others to achieve within your team. This is a great role for someone who is confident in their ability to work proactively using their own initiative, as well as the ability to work effectively with senior colleagues from other functions. Accreditation as a Prisoner Custody Officer is advantageous but not essential.
