About Accounting for International Development

International Development Career Opportunities

Established in 2009, Accounting for International Development (AfID) supports finance and audit professionals in achieving their goals, with highly rewarding career opportunities with charities, INGOs, social enterprises and specialist international development grant audit departments in the UK and overseas.

Working in the International Development sector allows you to make a positive impact on global issues, gain real job satisfaction, potentially travel the world, and work with incredibly inspiring people.

Overseas Volunteer Assignments

Alongside our specialist recruitment services, AfID offers every type of accountant, from anywhere in the world, the opportunity to use their skills to support a broad range of non-profits globally.  Volunteer Assignments from 2 weeks to 6 months form part of our ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity of organisations in more than 50 countries.

Accounting professionals could be budgeting with a street child centre in Kampala (Uganda), coaching a hospital bookkeeper in Kigali (Rwanda) or financial reporting for a school in Kathmandu (Nepal). Our partners, which include NGOs, social enterprises, hospitals, micro-finance organisations, agricultural projects and schools are doing amazing work to tackle poverty and inequality in their communities but are unable to access vital professional skills training.

AfID have now arranged assignments for over 1,300 accountants from 50 countries, providing over 250,000 hours of one to one support to more than 500 non-profit partners globally.

What do AfID Volunteers actually do on assignment?

Volunteer accountants/pro-bono consultants provide one to one coaching and consultation on all matters relating to the organisation’s finances and accounting. Support often includes the following topics:

  • Organisational needs assessment/ Internal audit, Year-end/ Project-end Audit preparation
  • Budget assessment, preparation and analysis
  • Internal and External (donor) reporting & grant management
  • Developing financial procedures & controls
  • Cash-flow forecasting, cash management & financial planning
  • Coaching & mentoring new or inexperienced FMs/FOs and CDs
  • Review and development of local income generation activities

What types of Volunteer roles are available?

All AfID assignments are customised to closely meet the volunteer’s own personal preferences and unique circumstances. Assignments can be as short as 2 weeks, and as long as 6 months, and each one forms a part of our ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity of charities.
