The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (the Office) assists the C&AG to audit and report on the accounts of public bodies
establish that transactions of public bodies are in accordance with the legal authorities governing them and that funds are applied for the purposes intended examine whether State bodies are using their resources economically and efficiently and have mechanisms in place to evaluate the effectiveness of their operations authorise the release of funds from the Exchequer for purposes permitted by law.
The C&AG’s audit remit extends to over 300 public bodies. Audits vary greatly in size ranging from large Government Departments and large agencies such as the Health Service Executive and the National Asset Management Agency to small non-commercial semi states and local bodies such as County Enterprise Boards.
The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General has 170 staff. Apart from administrative staff, most are either professionally qualified accountants or studying for an accountancy qualification. Other staff have a mixture of qualifications in business, economics and management.
